Tragedy of a death foretold

Rosemary Nelson, a lawyer, has been murdered in Northern Ireland, with a Protestant paramilitary group claiming responsibility. She had previously complained of death threats from the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), and her murder means that there is pressure to reform the RUC. There is also more weight given to the reluctance of the Irish Republican Army to disarm, as a result of the murder. The aim of the paramilitary group was to hamper the peace process, but the murder may not have this effect.

British opinion on solutions for Northern Ireland is divided between two misguided options: negotiation with terrorists and internment of suspects. Britain has to be tough on terrorism within the law and talk only to representatives that forsake violence.
