Article Abstract:
The body sector in the global skin care market has shown a relatively dynamic performance compared to the larger facial sector. In Italy, the body sector grew 17.8% in value terms over the review period despite the slight decline in overall skin care value sales. Only in Spain has the facial sector outperformed the body sector. Most categories of the body sector grew over the review period, but its dynamism has been largely due to innovations designed to fight cellulite and achieve body-contouring. Meanwhile, manufacturers are trying to expand the purchasing base by developing products targeted at specific user groups and specific user needs.

A market research study was conducted on the international retail market of sun care products in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. The products are divided into three categories: sunscreen, aftersun and artificial tanning. Some of the major findings are that consumers are becoming more and more cognizant of the dangers of exposure to UV radiation, that the market is very much affected by the weather and economic conditions, and that seasonality remains a major problem for the sun care market.
