Sweet biscuits recorded the most dynamic volume growth of 14.5% over the five-year period brought largely by consumers decision to take advantage of the price war among manufacturers. However, in terms of value, sweet biscuits posted a decline of 1.2% due to a series of opposing trends over the review period, which include development of private label products, emergence of discounters and price-cutting among branded manufacturers. Savoury biscuits posted the highest in terms of value growth, recording growth of 7.6% over the same period. Bread substitutes recorded modest volume growth of 3.4% and value increases of 3.7% during the review period.

New product launches in Italy's market for sweet and savoury biscuits during the five-year review period, from 1993-1997, has been characterized by a theme that centers on the repackaging of products to encourage snacking. Snack-sized packs among sweet and savoury biscuits manufacturers are designed to retain freshness of the products until they are opened. Barilla's sweet cracker Biscocrack, launched in 1996, was the only really innovative, high-profile product to be launched. Under the savoury biscuits category, Saiwa expanded its cracker products to include a product enriched with oregano and olive oil and branded Gusto e Fantasia.
