Spain's breakfast cereal market was dominated by children's sector in terms of value with a share of 51% in 1997. The value share of the sector declines steadily from 1995 to 1997 as volume demand drops. A greater alignment of price and volume was observed in comparison to past years as value continue to run slightly ahead of that of volume at 0.9 percentage points in 1997. The family cereal sector posted a value share increase of 5.3 percentage points from 1995 to 1997, attributed to strong demand for niche products with high fiber or low calorific content.

Spain's family sector of the breakfast cereal market was dominated by dietetic cereals with a share of 57.9% in value terms in 1997. The subsector experienced a 13.7 percentage point growth in its share in value terms, slightly exceeding the performance of that of volume. Spanish consumers showed willingness to pay a steeper price for cereals if deemed to be of nutritional value and high quality. The sector was also the subject to line extensions and advertising campaigns in the latter years of the 1993 to 1997 review period.

Spain's children's cereals sector of the breakfast cereal market was dominated by sugar-coated cereals with a value share of 48.3% in 1997. Sugar-coated cereals accounted for the most important in value share despite a steady decline from 1995 to 1997 in line with volume performance. The chocolate-coated cereals subsector had a share of 44.8% in 1997, while having a lower value share versus to that of volume by 1.1 percentage points.
