The overall political complexion of the Senate will be from liberal to moderate, as three elected Republicans are moderates. Ten new senators include four women and an American Indian. California Democratic senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer had the most heated campaigns.

Moynihan is one of the most powerful members of the Senate and as one of its more independent thinkers, he can intimidate members of both parties. As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, he pushed through the Clinton economic package when it appeared doomed.

Mike Mansfield

Former Senate majority leader Mike Mansfield, who has died at the age of 98, was an unassuming figure who played a major part in shifting political power in the Senate and between the Senate and the executive. He later became an ambassador.
