Russian Pres Yeltsin has abruptly canceled his planned Sep 1992 visit to Japan, because of Japan's insistence that the territorial dispute concerning the Kuril Islands be resolved prior to any discussion of economic aid. The validity of Japan's claim to the Kurils is by no means certain.

Games without frontiers: Belarus

Article Abstract:

Tenuous relations between Belarus and Russia have not improved despite the signing of the Community of Sovereign Republics in 1996, which defined the politics needs of both countries. Conditions in Russia are such that Yeltsin should consider truly helping Belarus's economy.

Those isles again: Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan will discuss the return of four northern islands that were captured by the Soviet Union during World War II when Boris Yeltsin visits Japan in September of 1992. If an agreement is reached, Japan would provide Russia with financial aid.
