Theatre in the frame

Article Abstract:

The Bedales school theatre is being built in an auditorium-style design with its 300 seats surrounding the stage, each being no more than ten metres from it. The Oak Design building design uses a green oak timber frame which has been cut and assembled by Carpenter Oak in Chippenham. Approximately 35 Bedales students were involved in the carpentery for the construction work. The final building costs is estimated at 1.2 million pounds sterling, approximately 0.3 million pounds less expensive than a more traditional design.

Manufacturing buildings

Article Abstract:

The requirements of a government-sponsored report that gives the building industry a target of reducing construction costs by 30% could be partially met if there was an increased use of standardisation and prefabrication. Such standardisation should result in lower component costs, a reduction in stock inventories and the increased use of flexible manufacturing technology. By combining standardisation and prefabrication, benefits could include shorter construction times, improved quality control and reduced costs.

The costs of fire precautions

Article Abstract:

Recent research undertaken on behalf of the BRE looked at the expenses related to complying with Part B of the Building Regulations. It was found that capital costs can vary from 1 pound sterling per sq mt for a single story industrial shed to more than 50 pounds sterling per sq mt for a high-rise office with atrium. The report also provides detailed information on fire protection measures and puts forward some recommendations for improving the Approved Document for Part B in order to cut construction costs.
