The trouble with heroes

Article Abstract:

Senator John McCain is a war hero and politician who has principles, and he is a US presidential candidate. He has proposed a rise in cigarette taxes which his own Republican party opposed, and he also favors campaign finance reform. Voters admire McCain, yet this is not reflected in their support for him, and he holds some 5% of the vote in opinion polls. It is unclear whether voters want a man who has seen insubordination as a virtue, when leaders are seen as men who should set rules.
