The Wills, Australia by-election is really part of a bigger political struggle between two political parties. Prime Minister Paul Keating's Australian Labor Party has been struggling with popular opinion because of the recession. Liberal Party opposition leader John Hewson sees the Wills seat as a key to Liberal gains.

Independent Phil Cleary was elected to the parliamentary seat vacated by former prime minister Bob Hawke in the Australian election. The result was very disheartening for both the Australian Labor and Liberal parties. Cleary was just the second independent elected in the past 25 years.
