The tragedy of Elian

Article Abstract:

Elian Gonzalez is a Cuban child who is the subject of a custody battle and a campaign by Cuban-Americans who want him to stay in the US. Cuban-Americans have been successful and have invested in Miami, rather than sending funds to relatives in Cuba. They aim to overthrow the Cuban government, but this is less true of recent arrivals, who are more like other economic migrants. Cuban exceptionalism is becoming less important, and moderation is needed for Miami the thrive.
