The salt that won't run to the sea

Article Abstract:

Irrigation, farming and tree clearing have led to a rise in salt levels in southern Australia which has killed off trees and other plants. Land has been damaged, and the water supply of Adelaide is under threat. One solution is to use the land for crops needing less water, such as grapes and olives. Farmers of rice and cotton crops in the Murray-Darling basin, which is heavily irrigated, may oppose such a move, but their future is affected by ecological problems if they do not agree.
