The prince and the purpose

Article Abstract:

The Prince of Wales is concerned that his institute will ensure that a sense of proportion returns to architectural activities, according to director of research Keith Critchlow. The institute intends to look at the links between harmony, beauty and proportion, and will also try to form connections between traditional and Modernist architecture. Students will be encouraged to look at buildings in terms of 'layers of transparency', and modern materials and building methods will be reassessed against five main criteria.

Why plundering the past is not always the answer

Article Abstract:

Two contrasting student accommodation buildings in Oxford, England demonstrate the problems of using new designs in a historical context. MacCormac, Jamieson and Pritchard's buildings at Wadham College have been designed with reference to the older buildings surrounding them. However, they are clearly modern and add interest to the site. Peter Yiangou's building for Manchester College uses classical rules for design and an 18th Century style. This more literal use of historical ideas is less successful.
