Article Abstract:
Cars can bring great pleasure, but they can also create problems such as pollution and accidents. The problems associated with car ownership have arisen because of equality, but cars at least pollute less than horses in terms of dead bodies and excreta. Cars have benefited rural areas and given independence to ordinary people. Voters are likely to wish to retain cars, but development, congestion and pollution have to be tackled. Voters will have to accept restrictions if these problems are to be solved.

A 3-yr UAW contract with Ford signed on Sep 17, 1996 is not a true victory for the union. Though it guarantees retention of 95% of the jobs, Ford makes no agreement not to outsource, a main contention of UAW, and lowers the salaries of newer workers. GM will probably not agree to a similar contract.
