South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and China are considered the leading Asian nations in the race toward technological advancement in the region. These countries have realized that economic development cannot be sustained through technologies acquired from the developed nations. Among the technological leaders, South Korea shows the greatest promise because of strong government support and unwavering commitment by domestic firms. Taiwan's growth as a technological leader has been hampered by the absence of adequate funding for research.

Many South Korean conglomerates are taking the lead in developing new technologies. Such a strategy is in stark contrast to past product development programs which were largely dependent on acquiring second-hand technology. The South Korean government strongly supports the effort of domestic companies to become technological innovators. Many analysts noted that such strategies will ensure South Korea long-term competitiveness in the international market.

Asian, European leaders meet to foster economic ties

Asian and European government leaders met in a two-day summit held in Mar. 1995 in Bangkok, Thailand. Participants reiterated their support for building stronger economic ties through economic and political cooperation. Compared to previous meetings, the recent summit avoided contentious issues such as human rights and labor exploitation and focused on developing avenues of cooperation.
