The management of change

Article Abstract:

Salomon Brothers' director of European facilities, Andrew Rabeneck, believes that long-term strategic planning and just-in-time management are both essential if a building is to run smoothly. Salomon Brothers has taken the idea of facilities management seriously, and under Rabeneck's guidance the investment bank has exploited and looked after its Victoria Plaza building in London. Rabeneck makes sure the building runs successfully by exerting rigid control, by having as few fixed elements as possible, and by having just enough empty space to allow for planning and implementation of changes.

Selling Britain to Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan offers many opportunities but also some challenges for UK construction companies, according to export promoter for UK construction in Japan Ron Marsh. Architectural practices which have won work in Japan have tended to do so on the basis of their existing reputation. Marsh hopes to improve this situation by establishing closer links with commissioning authorities and ministries in Japan. There are particularly good prospects for high quality door furniture, sanitaryware, planning systems and office furniture.

Change manager

Article Abstract:

UK architect Mike Forster joined British Airports Authority (BAA) in 1997, after spending 17 years working for architectural firm Sheppard Robson. Forster was one of a number of architects working on a project for Glaxo Wellcome, which left many dissatisfied with the way Sheppard Robson was going. The design mix at BAA is very refreshing and the work ethos supports a productive environment, according to Forster, who is looking forward to the challenges of airport designing.
