The Philippine government recently announced plans to lower the floor price for the historic Manila Hotel when it comes up again on the auction block. The government had earlier tried to get bidders for a 30% stake in the 83-year-old hotel but many backed out in view of the $17.2 million floor price and the possibility of government interference in running the renowned hotel. Government officials have expressed willingness to address the concerns of potential investors and many have been encouraged by this development.

To become a truly great city is the preoccupation of some of Asia's most important cities. These metropolises, which include Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai, admittedly have much to accomplish if they are to evolve into cities similar to London and New York. A great city is defined as having world-class art, architectural heritage, concerts and drama, a creative, diverse population and an aesthetically pleasing, clean and green environment.
