Article Abstract:

Modern day architects fail to incorporate landscape architecture into building design even though they have the freedom to do so. The work of early twentieth-century architects, who began to blend internal and external aspects of design, has not been continued within the profession. The existence of the separate professional body Landscape Institute illustrates the segregated attitudes of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The use of soil-free hydroponic systems for indoor plant growing in office buildings is discussed. The new system, which uses expanded clay pebbles as a growing medium, and the optimum conditions for hydroponically grown plants are described.

Article Abstract:

The use of natural landscapes and native plants in architectural projects is discussed. The importance of protecting habitats and of creating appropriate open spaces which complement surrounding architecture is stressed.
