Hindus are fleeing Kashmir as the Muslim majority proposes independence from India. Pakistan has had to prevent Muslims from the Pakistani Kashmir from crossing the border to lead a revolution. However, many Muslims in Kashmir say Hindus have nothing to fear.

The conflicts between Muslims and Hindus threaten to destroy the principles of democracy and secularism on which the 1950 Indian constitution is founded. If these conflicts escalate, India could become an ethnic war zone like the former Yugoslavia.
