The end of federalism

Article Abstract:

Since the 1958 Treaty of Rome establishing the European Community was created, progress toward greater European integration has been steady and consistent. Still, nearly 40 years later, it may be time for European Union enthusiasts to reassess its goals and try to create more public confidence.

Driven to distraction

Article Abstract:

The European Union is meeting in an inter-governmental conference in an attempt to revise the Maastricht treaty, to make it simpler to admit new member nations. As usual, negotiations are being bogged down by national interests, as nations refuse to give up sovereignty on certain issues.

A swampy path to closer union

Article Abstract:

The European Union has decided to hold a special meeting of its Inter-Governmental Conference in Dublin, Ireland on Oct 5, 1996, to try and revive momentum for the revision of the Maastricht treaty. Progress on revising the treaty has been very slow.
