The conquest

Article Abstract:

The Incas and Aztecs were defeated by Spanish invaders, and weakened by diseases brought by the Spaniards. The Aztecs had borrowed from Mayan and Toltec culture and developed mathematics, writing and calendars. Crafts such as textiles were developed by the Incas. Human sacrifice was demanded by Aztecs of subject peoples, while the Incas sought labor. Catholicism and hunger for gold fueled the Spaniards, who were less interested in farming than were settlers in North America, and tended to live in cities.
