The chaos at the door
Article Abstract:
The new Russian president, Vladimir Putin, faces a number of challenges, such as falling living standards, decaying infrastructure, and poor food and housing. The population has decreased by 6 million people in the 10 years to 2000. A further fall to 80 million from 143 million could occur by 2050. Crime and corruption are serious problems, and there is a war in Chechnya. Economic growth has begun to recover and some smaller companies are showing promise, though successful companies can attract corrupt bureaucrats and gangsters. Putin has to tackle corruption, but there are still risks from Russian nationalism.
