The Middle East death-rattle

Article Abstract:

Israeli Pres Yitzhak Rabin and PLO leader Yasser Arafat are threatening their delicate peace accord. Rabin is unrealistic in expecting Arafat to effectively disarm all Palestinian terrorists. Israel must decide whether it will sacrifice short-term safety for a long-term peace.

Talk to Arafat

Article Abstract:

Yitzhak Shamir should counter the bad effect his expulsion of Palestinian extremists has had on the peace talks by agreeing to talk with the Palestine Liberation Organization head Yasir Arafat. This would show the Palestinians that Israel is willing to recognize their rights.

Both Bill Clinton and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin are anxious for Middle East peace talks to resume. Attacks on Israeli settlers are increasing and destroying the initiative for talks. Rabin is reportedly considering ceding the Golan Heights to Syria.
