Article Abstract:

Yoshiro Mori has taken over as prime minister in Japan, due to the serious illness of Keizo Obuchi, and Mori faces the task of encouraging economic growth. Obuchi had increased public spending, reduced taxes, and put aside funds to deal with banks' bad debts. Public spending has helped the economy to recover some growth. Mori has to decide on an election date, which could be in Jun 2000. The Japanese leader who emerges from the election will have to tackle to problem of public debt.
