Testing the waters

Article Abstract:

China's renewal of claims over the Spratly, Paracel and Diaoyutai island groups has rekindled animosities with neighboring countries. The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed a law in Feb 1992, unilaterally asserting China's sovereignty over the disputed islands. The law also gives China the prerogative to apply military solutions in settling its territorial disputes. Countries that are also claiming the disputed islands have reacted cautiously to the latest Chinese move.

Insular possessions

Article Abstract:

China's new law which declares its sovereignty over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea has strained its relations with Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, complicating the issue with their own claims. The East China Sea is thought to be oil-rich and a high-potential hydrocarbon resource area. Possible solutions include China and Japan agreeing on an equidistant line and dividing the area into portions. Nevertheless, joint development of the area may be the only alternative to open conflict.
