Telecom firms face gains

Article Abstract:

The depreciation of Asian currencies positively affects telecommunication firms engaged in international direct-dial (IDD). Companies who have higher incoming calls than outgoing calls, such as Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) and PT Indonesia Satellite (Indosat), are expected to gain from the currency crisis due to high US dollar earnings. On the other hand, cellular companies, such as Thailand's Total Access Communications, are expected to incur heavy losses due to high foreign borrowings and small foreign-related earnings.
