Talks end, war goes on: Angola

Article Abstract:

Peace talks broke down in Angola in May 1993 after six weeks of negotiation. The UNITA rebel forces will not accept the defeat of their leader Joseph Savimbi in the elections in Sep 1992. The recognition of the Angolan government by the US infuriated UNITA negotiators.

UNITA disunited: Angola

Article Abstract:

An election scheduled for Sep 1992 could signal more fighting in Angola, which has known little peace since it became independent in 1975. The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) has lost much of its appeal since the collapse of communism.

Close call: Angola

Article Abstract:

Angola almost fell back into civil war when the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola accused MPLA-PT of election fraud. Leaders from Europe and South Africa have made efforts to calm tension and encourage a sharing of political authority.
