Article Abstract:
A German shipbuilding consortium composed of Blohm + Voss, HDW and Thyssen Nordseewerke has received a 4.2-billion-Deutschemark contract from the German Navy to build three frigates in 1996. The first of the ships, a first-of-class Type F 124 anti-air warfare frigate being constructed by Blohm + Voss, was named FGS Sachsen on Dec 1, 1999. It has a delivery date of Nov 2002 while the other frigates are expected to be finished in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

ARGE U 212 consortium, which is made up of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) and Thyssen Nordseewerke (TNSW), has started construction of the first Type U 212 submarine for the German Navy. HDW intends to launch the first submarine in October 2001, with harbor and sea tests starting in early 2002. The submarines will be powered by a fuel cell-based air independent propulsion system, which will be employed for underwater, low-speed, low-noise endurance operations. The Type U 212 vessels will feature six torpedo tubes to launch their main weapon of STN Atlas Elektronik DM2 A4 heavyweight torpedoes. The submarines will have a Daimler-Benz Aerospace FL 1800U ESM system and a Kelvin Hughes Type 1007 navigation radar as surface sensors.

Article Abstract:
Blohm + Voss of Hamburg, Germany, has delivered a MEKO 200 Track IIB frigate to the Turkish Navy. The ship, which has been named as the TCG Salihreis, is the seventh MEKO 200 to be incorporated in the Turkish Navy but the first one of the Track IIB configuration. The new configuration boasts of such enhancements as a 16-cell Mk 41 Mod 8 vertical launching system that is capable of firing RIM-7P NATO SeaSparrow Missile surface- to-air missiles.
