Article Abstract:

Indonesia under Pres Suharto is energetically promoting family planning to curb population growth both at home and in other developing countries. As chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, Suharto has made contraception an important part of South-to-South aid. Indonesia's successes in this field include the highest ratio of couples using contraception and the lowest rate of population increase in Southeast Asia aside from the much smaller Singapore and Thailand. New markets for Indonesia's rubber industry are another reason to promote the use of condoms and other contraceptives.

Moving targets

Article Abstract:

Some ethnic Chinese who live and work in the city of Ujung Pandang, Indonesia, have begun moving their assets offshore as a result of growing hostility towards Chinese traders. There are no indications that popular resentment against the Chinese community will die down, and this means that the ethnic Chinese will continue to be unwilling to return their wealth to local banks. This will in turn hamper the recovery of the Indonesian economy. There are also indications that some Chinese are planning to move to other countries.

Potemkin villages?

Article Abstract:

The Toraja region of Indonesia should be able to absorb 500,000 tourists a year by the end of the 1990s, according to local officials. However, some observers fear that local people are not really ready to deal with the changes that will result from such a large increase in visitor numbers. Local people have expressed reservations about plans to designate three Toraja villages which have traditional Tongkonan clan houses as tourism enclaves.
