Article Abstract:

In an interview for Au Courant, Judith Maxwell, chairman of the Economic Council of Canada, envisions the role of the Economic Council over the next five to ten years as contributing to the formation of a national consensus on Canadian economic policy. The Council was created to encourage economic research, at a time when such research was seldom performed. Over the years, its research has become more comprehensive and moved into more technical areas. Planned changes for the Council include better communication of its research to a wider audience and shorter, more readable reports.

A question for the 90s

Article Abstract:

Economic Council of Canada Senior Research Director Keith Newton presents his views on the key education issues facing Canada as the 21st century arrives. Newton states that the Council's history of research into human resources led it to undertake its research projects on education, and he believes that the Council needs to focus the attention of its research in education on structural changes for continuous learning. The specific elements Newton feels that the Council will concentrate on are educational quality and resource allocation.

New director discusses Council

Article Abstract:

Harvey Lazar was appointed in 1987 to be one of the Economic Council of Canada's two full-time directors. He sees part of his role with the Council as a liaison to major decision-making organizations. Lazar believes that economic issues increasingly overlap with other concerns such as political, social, environmental, and technological ones. He states that imbalances in the world's major economies require a renewed interest in macroeconomics.
