The Asian stock market has been showing signs of improved economy, as investors and managers underscore the adoption of efficient management strategies. According to experts, efforts to reorganize operations and refocus strategies have not only contributed to a significant increase in share prices, but in improving profit margins as well. Some companies, particularly those involved in export business, have also benefitted from strong market shares, including Texmaco Jaya, Thai Union Frozen Products PCL and Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd.

Investors in Asian bonds are concerned about quality, the blue-chip name, such as Hong Kong Land Holdings, Hutchison Whampoa and Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway, partly because Asia Pulp and Paper defaulted its debt earlier in 2001. Investors interest in investment-grade paper is discussed in the context of the problems encountered with high-yielding, speculative-grade bonds. In the year ended April 27, Asian borrowers have issued a total of $12.2 billion in bonds, vs $14.8 billion in the year-earlier period.

A growing number of Asian banks are being acquired by foreign investors who are looking for potential markets to expand their businesses in. Investors are particularly eyeing for Thai, Indonesian, Korean and Singaporean banks that have meager financial resources or those that lack international competence. Although a number of banking institutions in the region have been shut down as a result of the financial crisis, investors believe prospects for growth are still promising.
