Article Abstract:

Criticisms have been made of Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, by 20 legislators and academics who also complain of corruption and are concerned about the impact of the Oslo peace process. Arafat has responded by arresting some of his critics. This has strengthened the opposition. Autocratic rule means that changes are handed down from above, and there is concern that conflict could become worse in the long term if it is suppressed.

Article Abstract:

The tenuous relations between Israel and the Palestine National Authority are hampered by Yasser Arafat's lack of control over terrorist acts. Arafat's response to such acts was to create special courts that supercede civil law, much like other Arab states, to try cases with terrorism.
