Scope of the scoop: Sentaku runs the stories mass media can't touch

Sentaku, meaning Options, is a Japanese monthly periodical that specializes in publishing domestic, international, economic and political news that the rest of the Japanese print media shies away from. Editor and founder Akio Iizuka says that Sentaku is able to report on stories such as the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications' efforts to control Nippon Telegraph and Telephone because it does not rely on advertising revenue from the corporate sector. However, the periodical's rising subscription rate may cause it to lose its reputation of being read by a small number of insiders.

Poison in the sky: China tops list of acid rain suspects

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Central Institute of Electric Power Industry reported on Oct 1992 that 50% of the ion emmissions that cause acid rain in Japan comes from China, 15% from Korea and 35% from Japan itself. Despite these findings, researchers have refrained from outrightly putting the blame on China for fear of jeopardizing economic relations with Peking. But China's Environmental Protection Agency head Qu Geping have stood up to admit the possibility that China's coal production industry has increased the presence of sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere.
