Politics of penitence: China seeks to gain from Japan's war guilt

Article Abstract:

China's efforts to turn Japan's WWII actions into political capital are one of several layers of maneuvering for position between the two. China is using the 50th anniversary of the war's conclusion to expand its Nanjing museum and focus on Japanese atrocities there. Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama visited a major military site during his May visit to China. Beijing hopes to gain leverage regarding Taiwan, Tibet, and interest on its debt to Japan.

Lei Zhenxiao, China's self-help guru, is having continual problems with Chinese censors even as that government claims they are loosening many of their policies regarding the publishing of literature. Lei's latest work is a collection of reformist writings by some of China's intellectual exiles. Lei has a long history of publishing in China and is one of the countries most widely read authors.
