San Miguel moves to reacquire Philippine Coca-Cola unit

San Miguel Corp., a beer manufacturer in the Philippines, is in negotiations to reacquire Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. from Australia's Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd. in a stock swap. San Miguel, who had sold its 70% stake to Amatil in 1997, hopes to turn around the financially struggling bottler.

San Miguel Corp. is moving forward with its planned reacquisition of Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd. Directors of San Miguel approved a planned exchange of shares that would give the company controlling share of Coca-Cola's operations in the Philippines.

Big bottler to reorganize

Article Abstract:

Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd of Sydney, Australia, the largest Coke bottler outside the US, announced plans to spin off its European business to current shareholders of the company. Upon shareholder approval, the plan will result in the creation of two major bottlers in the global Coke system, one each for Europe and Asia. A new company in Vienna, Austria, will manage the European operations.
