The net profit of Sterlite Industries has fallen by 14 percent to Rs71 crore in the first half of 1998-99. The company posted sales of Rs916 crore in the first half of 1998-99 against Rs625 crore in the first half of 1997-98. Its financial charges increased to Rs38 crore from Rs5 crore while depreciation was Rs40 crore against Rs12 crore. The company incurred a production loss of 7,000 tonnes as its copper smelter was closed for 33 days. This resulted in revenue loss of about Rs20 crore. It produced 30.55 lakh cable kilometre (lckm) of jelly-filled tele-cables in the first six months of 1998-99 against 25 lckm in the first six months of 1997-98. It produced 50,000 fibre kilometre (fkm) of optic fibre cable and 1.47 lakh fkm of optic fibre against 37,800 fkm of optic fibre cable and 44,000 fkm of optic fibre. The company's production of copper rods increased to 29,376 tonnes in the first half of 1998-99 against 23,409 tonnes in the first half of 1997-98. (khr)
