Russo-Japan ties inch forward

Article Abstract:

The recent visit by Yevgeny Primakov, Russian foreign minister, to Tokyo has helped improve strained relations with Primakov's proposal that the northern islands, seized by the Soviet Union after the war, be jointly developed by Russia and Japan. The Primakov visit has already resulted in the unblocking of Japanese loans to Moscow, which were frozen five years ago. Russia's application to join the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum may be affected by how it deals with the northern islands.

Good signs for Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

There seems to be strong international support for Hong Kong as it adapts to being a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It seems that the US and the UK are now willing to cooperate with the provisional legislature in Hong Kong, and China itself clearly wants the Special Administrative Region to be successful. The Chinese economy is set to become increasingly similar to that of Hong Kong, a trend which will benefit China and not damage Hong Kong.

China's attitude to the rest

Article Abstract:

The Chinese language reflects many foreign influences, even though China has traditionally regarded itself as the only civilized society in the world. However, the Chinese language also suggests a disinterest on China's part in the rest of the world. It is still common for China to be seen by the Chinese as being the centre of the universe, with all non-Chinese being regarded as outsiders. This attitude must change if China is to be accepted by the rest of the world.
