Rothmans Benson and Hedges has decided to withdraw sponsorship of the Symphony of Fire fireworks displays that are held in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, Canada annually. It has also withdrawn sponsorship of the Toronto International Film Festival. A new federal legislation has restricted cigarette companies from advertising in event sites. Instead, they can advertise only in direct-mail brochures and publications with adult readership. A total ban on event sponsorship will begin in Oct 1, 2003.

Sony Corp and Panasonic are engaged in a battle for supremacy in the portable CD player category. They have both introduced TV advertising campaigns in spring 2000. Sony has launched a new feature of its CD Walkman called g-protection which is claimed to have eliminated the skipping problem of earlier models and to compete better with Panasonic's Shockwave. Panasonic's campaign centers on a new AM/FM tuner that is included in the product.

Seven-Eleven Food Stores launched in Sep 2000 a creative two-for-one promotion on the Yahoo! Canada site to attract Canadian teenagers, 12 to 17, to buy the chain's grape slush Slurpees. The promotion offered unique greeting cards that teens could send to their friends by e-mail. These cards come with a coupon with a bar code that entitles the bearer one free drink at any Seven-Eleven store with the purchase of a 22-ounce grape Slurpee.
