Some 38 UK firms have been purchased by US companies during Jan-Sept 1997, at a cost of 1.2 billion pounds sterling. European countries, outside the European Union, have purchased 125 million pounds sterling worth of UK companies, in the same time period. Financial advisors Goldman Sachs and Co. rose from tenth position of UK transaction values, during 1996, to first place in Jan-Sept 1997. Goldman Sach's transactions reached a value of 6,976 million pounds sterling. Acquisitions of UK companies has grown to 1,290 but the value fell to 35,228 million pounds sterling, during Jan-Sept 1997.
