The UK restaurant catering market is forecast to grow in value sales by 5.1% from 9,704 million pounds sterling in 1997 to 10,199 million pounds sterling by the year 2002. The number of restaurant catering outlets decreased from 171,160 in 1993 to 168,981 in 1997, mainly due to independent facilities closing through competition from restaurant chains. The main restaurant catering sector is fast food and takeaway chains, which accounted for 5,225 million pounds sterling value sales in 1997.
