Article Abstract:
A greedy heuristic for solving the single-row facility layout problem known as quadratic assignment problem is introduced. The problem concerns the allocation of facilities or storage space along a line under the constraint of minimizing the amount and cost of materials movement. To address this, the heuristic allocates 'facilities with the largest number of moves between them to adjacent locations.'

Article Abstract:
The combined use of marketing and manufacturing strategies by an incumbent firm facing competition from a new market player is considered. Specifically, two options for defending market position when both firms are under resource allocation constraints were evaluated. The results show that, when both price sensitivity and the return on manufacturing investments are high, it is better for firms to allocate funds for advertising and distribution and manufacturing improvements because the latter lowers the unit production cost and therefore, product price.
