Reorientation process: new US secretary of state outlines Asia policy

Article Abstract:

Incoming Pres Bill Clinton has to address several international issues which outgoing Pres George Bush was not able to resolve. Initial glimpses into how the Clinton Administration will handle foreign policy issues were evident during the confirmation hearings for Sec of State nominee Warren Christopher. Since Clinton never outlined his policy regarding Asia during the campaign, Asian diplomats in the US are scrutinizing Christopher's statements in the confirmation hearings for clues. Only general positions were establishedby Christopher regarding Asia.

Article Abstract:

US Trade Rep Mickey Kantor began to carry out the Clinton administration's vow to retaliate against US trading partners, including several in Asia, judged guilty of closing their markets to American exports or of violating intellectual property rights. Kantor on Apr 30, 1993 warned Japan to allow the US to compete in its construction services and supercomputer markets or face imminent punitive action. India and Thailand, deemed the worst violaters of intellectual property rights, must improve their behavior by Jul 31 or face punishment.

Pledging allegiance

Article Abstract:

Formulators of US policy in Asia have been affected by a resurgence of idealism as a result of the collapse of the USSR. To policymakers, the pursuit of democracy and human rights has become a reflection of American values besides being vital to US interests. Previous allies, such as Japan, are now being cited for their lack of interest in the promotion of human rights and democracy in the region.
