Ramifications of tool magazine size on the makespan and routing flexibility of flexible manufacturing systems

Article Abstract:

The relationship between tool magazine capacity and the performance of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) is studied by means of two mathematical models. The models are used to analyze several critical parameters, including part routing, tool loading, production volumes and part mix. Results tool magazine capacity has significant effect on the makespan and routing flexibility of FMSs.

Manufacturing flexibility: measures and relationships

Article Abstract:

A framework to facilitate flexibility measure development, introduce two new measures and evaluate the relations among some flexibility types in manufacturing is proposed. The development of new measures for volume and expansion flexibility is aided by the use of various pairs of dimensions of comparison which enhances the understanding of the flexibility types. A listing of some of the accepted relationships among flexibility types is provided.
