Boris Yeltsin's dismissal of Russian security chief Alexander Korzhakov, along with two other high-ranking officials, may have adverse effects on Yeltsin's reelection bid. Korzhakov's has many supporters throughout the army, police and security services who support his anti-democracy beliefs.

Russia's run-off ructions

Article Abstract:

There will be a runoff election in Russia between Pres Boris Yeltsin and Gennady Zyuganov, with Yeltsin favored to win. Yeltsin has helped his chances by appointing Alexander Lebed, a candidate who received 15% of the vote, as his security adviser.
