Purina Philippines and United Laboratories are fighting over market share for their respective bird foods, the former's Rooster Booster and the latter's Thunderbird. Purina's high-octane feed, which has been in the market for only six months, is seen to eat substantially into Thunderbird's share of about half the market. The Philippine market for bird food is a large and lucrative one, with cockfighting a popular sport in the country. Sales of bird food reach about $733.7 million annually.

Casino magnate Stanley Ho has made his intentions known by announcing his investment plans in the Philippines as his license to operate in Macau, China, expires in 2001. The move is seen as pre-empting the turnover of the Portuguese colony to China in Dec 1999. Ho is no stranger to the Philippines, having ran nine casinos during the term of the late Pres Ferdinand Marcos. As part of his investment plans, Ho has invested $50 million in BW Resources Corp, a Philippine gaming firm. He also revealed BW's plans of acquiring Best World Gaming and Entertainment Corp.
