Pulling the plug on reservoirs

Article Abstract:

A surplus reservoir site is the subject of controversial development plans. A pumping station and adjoining land in Stoke Newington, London, England, is surplus to the requirements of Thames Water. The Victorian pumping station was built in the style of a medieval castle and the Save the Reservoirs committee, a local residents' protest group, has announced an urban design competition to take the initiative in determining the future of the site. The residents fear over-development and wanted more consultation with Thames Water. The water company have been drawing up their own development plans.

From hospital to housing

Article Abstract:

A housing association is redeveloping a hospital site in north London for housing. The Royal Free Hospital was built in 1848 and many of its buildings are listed. Two housing associations have bought the site and are refurbishing some of the buildings and adding new accommodation within the site. The housing is high density with few facilities for children and is deliberately planned not to appear to be social housing. Similar schemes are unlikely as housing associations are not considered appropriate for high-value urban schemes involving expensive restoration of historic buildings.

Spotlight on good design

Article Abstract:

The Bristol Society of Architects has drawn up plans for an architecture centre in the city of Bristol, England. The centre would occupy a converted warehouse in the docks area and would provide a meeting place for architects and others involved in building and educational services for the public. Exhibition spaces, a shop and offices for the regional organisation of the Royal Institute of British Architects would be incorporated. Funding will come from donations, sponsorship and commercial rents from the rest of the building.
