Article Abstract:
The demonstrations in major Chinese cities over the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization had a dramatic, albeit brief, impact on the country's tourism industry. Bookings declined sharply as the US and the UK advised travelers against going to China, but quickly returned to normal as the protests ended. Hotels and airlines experienced a drop in occupancy and passenger rates in the days following the protest, such as the Holiday Inn Lido in Beijing, which reported a decrease in room occupancy and banquet-room reservations and Dragon Airlines, which reported about 400 cancelled bookings.
