Article Abstract:

Production of drinks and food grew just 0.6% in Germany in 1997, with sales reaching DM225.7 billion. Imports grew to DM43.5 billion in 1997 from DM37.6 billion in 1996, while exports grew to DM35.8 billion from DM30.9 billion. Retail expenditure on food stands at around DM175 billion a year, with total expenditure on tobacco, drink and food, including eating out, standing at between DM350 billion and 375 billion a year during 1990-1997. Meat consumption is falling, while frozen food sales increased around 5% in 1997 following continuous growth since 1960.

Meat consumption in Italy grew 2.1% in 1997 while production grew 2.5% and exports 6.3%. Fish imports increased nearly 9%, with fish consumption growing 7% while domestic output grew just 2.8%. Preserved tomatoes production grew 4% to satisfy export demand, with the domestic market unchanged. Preserved fruit output fell 18% while preserved vegetable output grew 6%. The chocolate confectionery market fell 9.2%, while consumption of industrial pastry, crackers and biscuits grew by more than 8% in 1997 and is expected to grow further during 1998-1999. Italy's pasta market is believed to have peaked, but exports are likely to maintain growth.
