Press and pirates

Article Abstract:

The violent repression of pro-democracy demonstrators in Thailand by its military has been adequately covered by the country's print media and video counterfeiters. With radio and television undermilitary and government control, Thais had to rely on the relatively independent and critical print media for stories regarding the demonstrations. Video counterfeiters, on the other hand, did some good by releasing thousands of copies of uncensored video footages of the Thai army's ruthless assault on the demonstrators. Copies sold for 200 baht in stalls across Thailand.

No highway?

Article Abstract:

Chaos rules Thailand's transit planning and development. One completed toll road has stood unused for months while its contract is disputed, thanks to domestic politics that created last-minute changes. The case will decide whether other investors pursue planned or in-process roads, elevated trains and related projects. The move a decade ago to privatize transit development should have saved the government money, but it may yet have to pay for some projects itself.

Going for a song

Article Abstract:

The recent arrest of a stock speculator in Thailand did no substantial damage to the country's financial system, although there was a decline in stock prices after the arrest. Observers say that the healthy state of the economy contributed to the financial system's stability in the face of such measures. However, caution is still being advised by observers because of the possibility that Song may not be convicted for his offense.
