Posing a problem

Article Abstract:

Significant policy inconsistencies have been emerging from Burma's military junta since the National League for Democracy stepped up its opposition campaign in Jun 1998. There are indications that hardliners within the armed forces are challenging military intelligence chief Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt's liberal policies, and domestic and international pressures seem to be forcing the military junta to return to a more reactionary stance. Indeed, it is not impossible that every member of the opposition will be imprisoned.

Article Abstract:

Burma is facing serious economic difficulties as a result of the economic crisis in Asia. The country saw rapid economic growth in the early 1990s, but growth could slow to less than 2% in 1998. The country's military junta favoured liberalization for a while, but is now seeking to reassert control over the economy. The budget deficit rose to 7% of GDP in the year to Mar 1998, and the value of the kyat has declined dramatically.
