Article Abstract:

The decline in inflation rate from 17% in 1992 to 6.9% in Feb 1993 hasshown some hope for India's economy despite the political instability. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao's Congress is composed of the radical free-market Right who believes in economic liberalization, lowering tariffs and globalization while socialists believe in self-reliance. The communists of WestBengal as well as the Hindu-nationalists oppose international free trade. Thus,Rao must rally the fractious Congress into developing economic reforms to put India back on its feet.
